I've been bitten...

...by the sewing bug! Those of you who read Lis's blog will know that on Saturday she gave me my first sewing machine. Very exciting. So, on Saturday night I got started! Despite having only left over oddments of fabric and one spool of thread, I set to and managed to make myself a bag - not fantastic, and in fact I didn't finish it as it wasn't worth doing, but it is serviceable if needed. The main thing is that I realised I liked the pattern, but wanted a longer strap and a deeper bag. Sunday was a busy day involving siblings, picnics, and lots of ball games, so I didn't manage anything on Sunday night - but on Monday I took myself (and Sam) to the closest fabric shop and bought *something* (it didn't matter what...I just needed something to sew with!!). Three hours at my machine last night, and I am the proud owner of a pretty cream bag which will perfectly compliment (and complement) many of my holiday outfits, and hopeful be strong enough to last me the remainer of the summer too:

And this morning I have done a little embellishing on the drapes that Lis made for me at the weekend.

Right then, what next? Any suggestions??!

  1. Well if your going to get into sewing in a big way you'll need to make a pin cushion it's a sewing must and a needle case for all those needles your going to need and perhaps a little case to hold a small pair of scissors and thread for sewing on the go!Hope you find the suggestions useful?lol

  2. Love it, well done Saz. I second what Georgie says although they are often the sort of things you are given as gifts so you might want to hang fire on that and.....what embellishing have you done? Love you.

  4. There are lots of ways to go with the sewing craft. You can sew clothing, although that requires some "technical" reading of patterns. If you want to go that route, I'd start with some things for your son. Kids don't really care how it looks, so if it turns out a bit lumpy... it'll give you a place to make errors and still get some use out of the thing. (I think the real crucial thing is to check the pattern for suitable fabrics for that design. I made lots of errors in that dept. before I learned about that little area of the pattern envelope.
You could make quilts, pillows, curtains... I know where you could get some help...

  5. Lovely! I recommend that you make whatever you most want to next (and that you raid your mum's stash too, tee hee!).
Remember that if you want an ultra quick-fix felt and fleece don't fray so you can whip up simple monsters and soft toys in a trice, leaving more time to make little bits of georgeousness (like your bag) for yourself! Well done, the bag looks super!

  6. Love it! Looks simple yet elegant and fun too! :D Sew what ever makes you happy! I have moods and sew bags, clothes, quilt tops, table ware like place-mats & coasters. When I bought my first machine, the lady in the shop suggested I sew a cover, as mine didn't come with one. So if you don't have a cover...enjoy your new found craft!

  7. What? You went shopping? I thought Moms were there to provide more than a machine. Happy sewing!

  8. Welcome to the creative covern! Second hand shops are good places for fabrics: large mens' shirts yield loads of fabric from the back (aim for 100% cotton if poss) and duvet covers and flat sheets are great for sewing quilts with. I once found two unopened rolls of fabric for less than the price of 1m. If you are ever in the heathrow/Windsor area, let me know through Lis and I can find you loads of useful bits!
